Cares of a Wandering Boy tells the story of a few days in the life of fourteen-year-old Sam Furlong. It’s a different sort of life (spent haunting public libraries and roaming dusty California back roads with his father), a life Sam wouldn’t trade for anything. But life, as Sam is beginning to understand, isn’t about what he wants. Something is wrong with his father, the architect and navigator of their unique, closed world, something that is taking him apart piece by piece and threatening to bring an end to their idyllic way of life. Determined to get the help his father needs while preserving the only world he’s ever known, Sam sets off on a journey into the great unknown of the Real World. Winding through the dark forest of his father’s secretive past and the uncertain landscape of his own future, Sam’s quest will raise as many questions as it answers: Who is his mother? Why is it that he knows nothing about her? Is his father the man he seems? Is he really trying to save his world, or escape from it?
